BA Hons Photography
Medway Photo Festival 2014

Charlie Stanhope, from his recent series produced for the Commission Unit. Next week sees the launch of Medway Photo 2014. This is an annual festival conceived and produced by 2nd Year students from BA(Hons) Photography, Contemporary Practice.

As part of your task for the commission Unit you are asked to complete Task 2, which is set out later in this post. Its also a chance to build on your networks, meet both students and tutors, fellow photographers alike.

There 2 key events for your diary, one is Thursday 23rd January, when the private views take place. Its great opportunity to see and talk photography over a glass of wine… This normally starts at around 6pm. I’ll be there with Foundation students from Canterbury and will be on my best behaviour. The website for the Festival, with all the details including directions and maps is here.

THE BRIEF: COMMISSION UNIT – TASK 2

You are required to select two 2nd Year exhibitions of Photo Medway 2014 contrast and compare them. You must study both exhibitions carefully and note the similarities and dissimilarities between how the images have been displayed and consider the exhibitions in terms of aesthetics and concepts. Please investigate both exhibitions and examine how each curator has po- sitioned the images in relation to one another and also in relation to the exhibition’s concept/theme. You must become a ‘critic’ or ‘reviewer’ of your chosen exhibitions: pay attention to the sequence of the images, the size of the images, the framing of the images, the lighting of the exhibition venue, the press-release, the title of the exhibition, the general feel/atmosphere of the exhibition, the way the audience is adressed and the chosen exhibition venue.

Through the process of your interrogation, you will be able to understand the narrative behind each individual exhibition. Please collect your research and prepare a 300-500 word individual blog-entry that must be completed by the final deadline of the unit submission on the 21st March 2014 at 10am.

ART IN FOCUS: SATURDAY 25TH JANUARY

On Saturday 25th January, 11am – 3.30pm, at Sun Pier House, we will have Art in Focus. This event will introduce the audience to a diverse range of artists who predominantly produce work within the Medway region. Each speaker will present their work and reflect upon their inspirations and working methodology. Photography students from the University for the Creative Arts (Rochester) exhibiting as part of the Medway Photo Festival will also present their projects and group exhibitions. The day will provide a fascinating insight into the ideas and work produced by both professional and student practitioners. Details of the address and schedule are at the bottom of the post.
