Open Lecture: Lucy Levene – Portraiture

Sara Stockbridge, by Lucy Levene for The Saturday Telegraph Magazine. To support the Object & Body Unit, please note an important date for your diary.  Wednesday 9th October 2013, 10am, Lecture Theatre 2 (First Floor). Photographer, Lucy Levene, will give a lecture and run seminars in which she will show how she uses research to develop her photographic projects.

Lucy Levene watches her own generation. In 2001 she began to take reportage shots in a nightclub -‐ a series that she continued until 2004 -‐ to observe the behaviours of her contemporaries. The scenes that she photographed mimic scenes in a play in which the actors are exaggerating their movements to attract more attention. Although they were not aware they were being photographed, Levene’s subjects are nonetheless acting. They know that they are being watched. In this way, the photographer studies a generation for whom image is apart of everyday life. In the series Marrying In (Please God by You), she explores another aspect of her own culture: by photographing herself next to a young man with whom she maintains a physical distance, she wants to show the incongruity of the custom that dictates that Jewish people should intermarry. Brought up in a Jewish family, she is questioning the basis of a tradition that for her generation has become a means of cultural distinction, rather than a religion. In her work, Lucy asks questions about the desire to maintain at all costs cultural distinctiveness within a multicultural society.

Lucy Levene completed her MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art in 2004. Her work has been widely published and exhibited both in the UK and abroad and has been included in group shows at the Museum of Modern Art in LA, The National Portrait Gallery in London and the Aperture Foundation in New York. Publications include ‘ReGeneration; 50 Photographer’s of Tomorrow’ and ‘In Our World, New Photography from Britain’. Most recently she was selected as a UK winner of Magenta Flash Forward for her series ‘My Father’s House’ and as one of four winners of the inaugural 1000 Words Photography Prize. As an editorial photographer she works regularly for the Saturday Telegraph Magazine, The Guardian Weekend and for the Sunday Times Magazine.
